Many pundits may not have expected that Humble Atascocita would stand at 7-1 (5-1 in tough District 13-5A) heading into Week 9. However, most of those pre-season swamis had no idea that former wide receiver Greg Campbell would make the move to quarterback so easily. Last week’s relatively rare 31-17 win over crosstown rival Kingwood provides the perfect example. Taking what the defense gave him, Greg ran 24 times for 235 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 10 of 16 passes for 157 yards and another score. The Eagles sprinted to a second-quarter 21-0 lead and were never headed. Campbell has now thrown for 1,608 yards (117 of 190 in the air) and 17 touchdowns and run for 820 yards (133 carries) and nine more scores. Not bad for a young man, who a year ago was busy catching 68 balls for 870 yards and 11 TDs.

104_1136Greg is also a good track athlete. He carries a solid B+ academic average, which has been getting better every year. He’s active in his church youth group and provides able assistance at Humble’s Punt, Pass, & Kick competition.

His coach has enjoyed seeing Greg’s growth as a football player. “He has always known the offense, but never from the quarterback’s perspective,” said Coach Craig Stump. “He worked hard all spring and summer and that has paid off. He has a great demeanor for a quarterback, always calm, never rattled. We won a four-overtime game this year and another on the last drive of the game and that’s a great tribute to this fine young man.”
