The Ford GT is Back and Better Than Ever

The Ford GT has a storied history: in 1966, the GT40 became the first American-made race car to emerge victorious in the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. The GT40 went on to win the next three Le Mans races as well. The upcoming Ford GT will carry on this legacy of superb performance courtesy of its next-generation carbon fiber construction and beastly V6 EcoBoost engine. That’s right, the latest Ford supercar is built on a V6. Don’t let that fool you, though; this car is not to be underestimated.

The GT’s 3.5L V6 EcoBoost is far and away the most powerful production EcoBoost engine that Ford has ever designed. Ford has yet to release exact figures, but thanks to its twin turbochargers and direct injection the GT’s engine is reported to deliver more than 600 horsepower. The body of the Ford GT makes the most of this wealth of power through its extensive use of carbon fiber and lightweight aluminum. The aerodynamic profile of the body is precisely designed to maximize efficiency and downforce while reducing drag as much as possible. Active components built into the GT’s body manage airflow in response to current conditions, such as the rear spoiler that automatically adjusts its height and angle for optimum performance.

The Ford GT is a headliner for Ford’s new Performance Group, which has announced that twelve new high-performance vehicles are in the works and will hit the road by 2020. These include the upcoming Ford Raptor, the new Shelby Mustang GT350 and GT350R, and the highly anticipated Focus RS. The GT will undoubtedly come with a premium price tag, but performance enthusiasts in the Houston area should keep an ear to the ground nonetheless. Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble may end up being one of the lucky few dealerships to get their hands on Ford’s new supercar.
