Congratulations go to Brandy Rood, 2016 Humble Independent School District’s Teacher of the Year. As part of her prize, she received a brand new Ford Mustang from Randall Reed and Planet Ford in Humble, Texas.
During the Totally 80s: Back to the Future of Education 2016 Humble ISD Education Foundation Gala Friday, April 1, 10 nominees were recognized for their ongoing and outstanding excellence in education.
During her award-acceptance speech, Mrs. Rood said, “This is amazing. This means a lot to a girl who wasn’t supposed to be here.”
Per The Observer newspaper: When Rood was a small child, her home was destroyed by a fire leaving her homeless and with burns over 40 percent of her body including her lungs and vocal chords. After enduring 40 surgeries, Rood was bullied by her classmates because of her voice and scars but it was theater arts that Rood turned to as a way to escape. Her theater classes, theater teacher and students saw past the scars and it was these experiences and the impact a teacher can have on others that made Rood want to become a teacher.
“This is a culmination of hard work and realizing my destiny, to a certain extent, because of everything I went through and it proves that God knew better than I did on what his plan for me was,” Mrs. Rood said. “My purpose is to work with children specifically teenagers who are going through struggles and this proves I am in the right place.”
“There’s no one that is more deserving,” said Chuck Kramer, Planet Ford in Humble’s partner and general manager. “We’re happy to be able to help recognize all of their never-ending efforts.”
Pine Forest Elementary School teacher Jennifer Howard was named as the Secondary Teacher of the Year and was honored with a trip to a home in the Florida Keys and a flight donated by a foundation supporter and United Airlines.
The 10 teacher finalists included: Sara Szcepaniec, Lorena Curiel, Howard, Patrick Andrus, Barbara Joylyn Trigg, Laura Michelle McCrary, Virgilio Davis, Rood, Rex Wolf and Julie Sahmel. Each one of the 10 finalists received a new iPad, donated by parents and alumni Jonathan and Carrie Brinsden.
