Car Tech Talk News

If you keep up on car tech talk, you’ve probably heard about Cellular Vehicle to Everything Technology, or C-V2X. There are a lot of ideas and promises attached to this technology but as Don Butler, Executive Director, Ford Connected Vehicle Platform and Product, shares in a recent Medium article – it’s a daunting task.

If anyone can do it, Ford can. The Ford engineering team is creating new C-V2X innovations in addition to developing their core technologies.

At the Intelligent Transportation Society of America annual meeting in Washington, D.C. earlier this month, Ford demonstrated two advancements in Cellular Vehicle to Everything Technology (C-V2X). One of the advancements demonstrated is a roadside unit that allows communications between vehicles and other road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter riders using different wireless technologies.  The other major advancement is an unalterable blockchain-based system that assists vehicles in negotiating the right of way at multi-way intersections for efficient traffic flow.

Advanced Roadside Communication

Vehicles equipped with C-V2X can communicate with other road users, such as pedestrians, scooter riders and others if they ‘speak’ the same technological language. This allows these C-V2X vehicles to determine the other users’ intended paths. If these other road users intend to cross their path, C-V2X vehicles can avoid a potential risk by ‘speaking’ to users, or if they do not speak the same language, the vehicles can translate signals from various wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth, to avoid collisions.

Navigating with Blockchain

Consider a future where we have human drivers alongside autonomous vehicles. What will happen when these vehicles approach a multi-way stop? We will no longer be able to wave at the next driver signaling that it’s their turn to go. However, this is where the blockchain technology becomes crucial. This unalterable blockchain-based system would allow road users to ‘discuss’ who will be entering the intersection and when. This ‘conversation’ happens so quickly, within a fraction of a second, so there would not be any delay while at the intersection. This technology would increase safety, efficiency, and security.

Dr. Derriere – Designing Ford Comfort

Dr. Mike Kolich, Courtesy of Ford Media

Our team at Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble recognizes the importance of comfortable seating in the interest of your seat for your commute or long trips. Ford supervisor Dr. Mike Kolich, a.k.a. Dr. Derriere, designed the new front seats in the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer with your comfort in mind. Now, let’s get to the bottom of this front seat redesign.

Comfort Throughout

The all-new 2020 Ford Explorer will debut new front seats that will not only be more comfortable for front seat passengers, but they will also be less cumbersome, too. The new seats will free up space for the second-row passengers to provide a more comfortable ride for everyone.

“Road trips can be largely defined by how comfortable people are – and when you get down to it, how comfortable our seats allow them to be,” said Dr. Kolich, whose Ph.D. in industrial and manufacturing systems engineering with a concentration on seat comfort has earned him the nickname among Ford seating experts.

The new design follows extensive research that suggests more and more families will be packing up in the car this year. According to AAA, more than 50% of family travelers will take a road trip this year. The U.S. Census Bureau also found that the average American commute is a record 26 minutes a day each way.

Dr. Kolich said, “As engineers, we’re thrilled with this new seat, but really it’s what our customers say and think that matters.” Dr. Kolich and his team found that when looking for comfort in a vehicle, customers focus on two aspects: shape and softness. Ford engineers believe this new design will improve the comfort of those Americans with long daily commutes or plans to take road trips.

A New Design

Courtesy of Ford Media

To add to the new level of comfort, Dr. Kolich and his team of engineers designed V-shaped seats that provide increased torso support as well as additional space to accommodate various body types. The new available 8 and 10-way adjustable front seats will cool passengers using a ventilation feature that draws warm air from the body, evolving from the previous design where the seats would blow cold air through seat perforations. The Explorer ST and Platinum trims will also feature a multi-contour system that includes unique massage patterns. These features will contribute to the overall experience that our Ford customers have come to expect.

Even More Comfort

The all-new 2020 Explorer isn’t just getting more comfortable for the front driver and passenger, rear passengers will also receive benefits from the new design. Great for families, the second-row seats feature the new-to-Explorer EZ-entry functionality. This design allows for easy access to the third row without having to remove a child’s booster seat. The front seat redesign also increases knee room for the second-row passengers, leading to fewer kicked backs for parents. Talk about a win-win!

Whether you have a long daily commute, enjoy road trips, or just want a more comfortable ride, we’ve got your back(side). Come visit Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble (serving Greater Houston, Atascocita, Kingwood, Conroe) or visit us online to get behind the new standard of comfort.

The Fusion of Ford and Argo AI

Courtesy of Ford Media

Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble has some Ford-tastic news! Autonomous cars may be closer to consumer use than we initially anticipated, thanks to the Argo AI and Ford collaboration. The Ford Fusion Hybrid is the third-generation test vehicle for the self-driving vehicles project.

Advanced Tech

This third-generation Ford Fusion Hybrid has been redeveloped to be equipped with advanced technology. Argo AI and Ford have modified the third-generation test vehicles with a significantly upgraded sensor suite that includes new sets of radars and cameras with higher resolution and higher dynamic range. As a result of this higher resolution and the upgraded software, the Fusion Hybrid test vehicle is better at detecting what’s ahead at greater distances than before and classifying it.

Courtesy of Ford Media

Another new upgrade on the third-generation test vehicles is the brand-new computing system. This system offers far more processing power than the previous generations. The computing system has improved thermal management systems that produce less heat and noise for riders in the vehicle. Thus, a smarter, quieter vehicle has been born.

Quite possibly the most important feature, Argo AI has equipped the Fusion Hybrid test vehicles with redundant braking and steering systems that aid in maintaining vehicle control in case of emergency. These systems serve as precautionary measures in the event that the units function fail to ensure they may safely brake or pull over as necessary.

Test Cities

Courtesy of Ford Media

Argo AI and Ford have been testing this Fusion Hybrid in major cities Argo AI is operating in such as Miami, Palo Alto, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh and Detroit. Testing in Detroit provides an advantage to Argo AI and Ford as Ford has engineering operations in Detroit and the city serves as the base for Ford’s self-driving efforts. Additionally, Detroit roads are not uniform with defining aspects such as the roads in Washington D.C. or Pittsburgh. Detroit’s roads may have roundabouts, multi-point intersections, unmarked roads and more. These factors challenge the test vehicles and force them to reason through navigating these obstacles while also predicting the moves of other drivers.

We at Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble (serving greater Houston, Conroe, Tomball, Kingwood, Atascocita) are excited to see where the future of our vehicles is going. We are happy that Ford can be an integral part of paving the road for autonomous cars. Stay up to date on Ford news with us by following our social media.

Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble Receives 2019 Dealer of Excellence

Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble is proud to announce that our dealership has displayed our commitment to exceeding customer expectations. As a result of our commitment, J.D. Power named us to their 2019 J.D. Power Dealer of Excellence ProgramSM for the second consecutive year. This program recognizes a select number of automotive dealerships throughout the United States that provide exceptional customer service.

“We are very proud to have this honor at all of these locations for two consecutive years,” said Randall Reed, founder and owner of World Class Automotive Group. “This certification sets us apart, especially coming from such an authority as J.D. Power.”

General Manager, John Centner, said, “I would like to thank each and every one of our team members at Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble. This recognition was only achieved because of the dedication of our wonderful team.”

J.D. Power has been known for its “Voice of the Customer” research for 50 years. As such, its Dealer of Excellence Program helps consumers identify leading retailers that will go the extra mile.

According to J.D. Power, buying a vehicle is an important financial transaction and can be stressful because there’s so much information to digest. The Dealer of Excellence Program aims to assist auto buyers who are looking for an exceptional dealership where they can confidently buy a vehicle. Certified dealers may also benefit from leveraging the J.D. Power brand and promoting their dealership’s commitment to an outstanding customer service experience.

“The Dealer of Excellence is an exclusive program,” said Mr. Reed. “Only the exception can qualify to be certified.” Those that do must pass a three-step process:

To begin with, J.D. Power limits the percentage of eligible dealerships by nameplate based on each brand’s performance in the most recent J.D. Power U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study.SM Thus, proportionally more dealerships from top-performing brands can become a J.D. Power Dealer of Excellence.

Next, dealerships must rank among their brand’s top performers in key customer satisfaction components consistent with measurements found in the SSI Study.

Cruiser’s Cafe at Randall Reed’s Planet Ford is one of our great amenities available to customers

Lastly, qualifying dealers must pass an audit to show they meet or exceed J.D. Power sales best practices. Those best practices include, but are not limited to, listing vehicle inventory and pricing on the dealership website; negotiating in an efficient and transparent manner; offering a fair trade-in value; and presenting a transparent and easy-to-understand menu of finance and insurance products.

Are you ready to receive award winning service by a dealer that goes the extra mile? Shop with us at Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble (serving Atascocita, Kingwood, greater Houston, Conroe, Katy) to experience great service yourself!

Planet Ford in Humble Proudly Supports Boots For Troops Gala

Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble is proud to be an ongoing supporter and the Runway Sponsor at The 3rd annual Boots & Suits Gala held June 1, 2019, at The Woodlands Resort.

The Miss Boots For Troops Combat Boot Runway Show featured five beautiful women who modeled the combat boots on the runway as part of a live auction which raised $27,700 to help our military men and women. Mind you, these models were not showcasing regular combat boots, these boots have a very personal story to tell about their experiences in combat.

The organization collected five pairs of worn combat boots from United States service members. Among the donated boots, one pair was from U.S. Congressmen (TX) Dan Crenshaw who donated a pair of his Navy SEAL worn combat boots. Another set of boots was donated from retired Army Captain Chad Fleming. Captain Fleming has been deployed overseas six times with the U.S. Army’s elite 75th Ranger Regiment in support of both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He has been wounded in combat on three separate occasions and has undergone 23 surgeries, one of which resulted in a trans-tibial amputation of his left leg. While most would assume this type of injury would conclude someone’s service to their country. Captain Fleming has re-deployed five times since his injuries, each time going right back into the fight. He is one of the few amputees who have been able to redeploy into combat as an amputee.

Major Scott Huesing donated a pair of combat boots as well. He is retired USMC Infantry Major with 24 years of service, both enlisted and as a commissioned officer. His career spanned 10 deployments in over 60 countries. During his numerous deployments, he conducted hundreds of combat. He is also a bestselling author, public speaker and media contributor who has written for Fox News Channel, Entercom, The Marine Corps Gazette, Military Times, Townhall, and the Daily Signal.

As the ladies showcase the boots, the story behind the boots unfolded and the auction opened up to the highest bidder. The winner received the precious boots in a custom-made shadow box that also featured the story behind the boots so it could be displayed in their home or office allowing the story and history to live on. “Boots for Troops and this event are so important not only in helping raise funds, but raise awareness about ways we can help our armed forces,” said John Centner, general manager of Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble, Texas. “We are thankful and honored be an ongoing supporter of Boots for Troops and the Runway Sponsor of this event.”

The black-tie gala featured many heart-warming moments, including a special gift for WWII Veteran Sgt. Clarence Sprague. He enlisted in 1943 and earned 3 Bronze Stars was honored and presented an enormous heartfelt gift.  Unfortunately, he was taken advantage of during Hurricane Harvey by contractors so Boots For Troops Co-Founders, Board of Directors and Home Depot presented him with an entire kitchen full of appliances.

A special thank you to the Houston-area businesses in our community that joined forces with Planet Ford to support Boots for Troops to benefit our military heroes. Halford Busby served as the Presenting/Diamond Sponsor. Moffitt Services served as the Entertainment Sponsor for the evening.

The event also featured a prominent live and silent auction with 100% of the proceeds going towards Boots For Troops programs. All proceeds raised will benefit Boots For Troops programs.

From the Recycling Bin to Ford Vehicle Parts

At Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble, Texas all know that recycling helps the environment, but what happens to all those plastic water bottles once they’re recycled? Well if you buy a Ford, you are helping drive change in how we recycle!

Ford Motor Co. is being innovative again in their approach to helping the environment by using recycled plastic bottles for underbody shields on all cars and SUVs, and wheel liners on F-Series trucks.

Recycled Parts

The underbody shield is a large part on vehicles and if the company was to use solid plastic, the part would nearly three times as much which would cut into the aerodynamics.

“We look for the most durable and highest performing materials to work with to make our parts, and in this case, we are also creating many environmental benefits,” said Thomas Sweder, design engineer, Ford Motor Company.

Ford uses about 1.2 billion recycled plastic bottles per year – about 250 bottles per vehicle on average.

Picture This

You put a plastic bottle into a recycling bin that is collected with thousands of others to be shredded into small pieces. The pieces are typically sold to suppliers who turn it into a fiber, by melting the bottle and extruding it. Those fibers are mixed together with other various types of fiber in a textile process and used to make a sheet of material – which is formed into the automotive parts.

Unlike solid plastic, recycle plastic is much lighter, which is ideal for the manufacture of underbody shields, engine under shield and front and rear wheel arch liners that can help improve vehicle aerodynamics. Not only that, but these shields also help create a significantly quieter environment on the all-new 2020 Ford Escape.

“Ford is among the leaders when it comes to using recycled materials such as this, and we do it because it makes sense technically and economically as much as it makes sense for the environment,” Sweder said. “This material meets all of our robust specifications for durability and performance.”

Five Fascinating Features of the All-New 2020 Ford Escape

At Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble, we know great vehicles when we see them. That’s why we’re so excited for the all-new 2020 Ford Escape! The popular Escape is getting a makeover, and with that makeover comes new and exciting features that we can’t wait to share with you. We struggled to narrow down our extensive list of favorite features to just five, but we somehow managed and we’re here to present our list!

1. Escape Exterior Redesign
The all-new 2020 Escape was influenced by some other Ford favorites. For example, the Mustang influenced the shield-shaped trapezoidal grille for the Escape. The Escape also borrowed some design elements from the famous Ford GT as reflected in the lower front end of the Escape.

2. Spacious Second Row

Designers with Ford wanted the second row of the 2020 Escape to feel like a second row, not second class. Thus, it was imperative to them to design it in a way that would maximize space for the rear passengers without impeding on the cargo space. Featured in the all-new Escape will be a sliding second-row seat. This provides rear-seat passengers ample legroom, knee clearance, and foot length to ensure a more comfortable ride.

Courtesy of Ford Media

3. Copious Cargo Space

When the second-row seat is fully forward, the rear cargo space in the gas-powered models increases approximately 6 inches to 37.5 cubic feet.

Previously, driving a hybrid meant that you would lose cargo space to the battery. That is no longer the case, as the hybrid battery is now under the second-row seat, thus leaving your rear cargo area open for your needs. Designers of the 2020 Ford Escape constructed the vehicle to accommodate a foursome of golfers in the front, with each individual’s golf set in the rear.

4. Diverse Drive Modes

The all-new Escape allows drivers to customize their driving experience to their desired mode or the conditions they may face. The five settings available are Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery and Snow/Sand driving.

Hybrid drivers can now experience the same benefits, as the all-new Escape offers four hybrid drive modes: Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later and EV Charge. The all-new EV Charge mode allows drivers to continue to charge the hybrid battery as they are driving and save the electric-only miles for a later time.

Courtesy of Ford Media

5. Titanium Technology

The 2020 Ford Escape Titanium models now feature an all-new heads-up display, a Ford first in North America. The heads-up display projects pertinent information onto a 6-inch screen that protrudes from the dashboard in front of the steering wheel. This technology allows drivers to receive key information, such as their speed, without taking their eyes off the road.

For obvious reasons, we at Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble (serving greater Houston, Atascocita, Kingwood, Humble, Conroe, Katy) are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the all-new Ford Escape. As we expect the 2020 Escape to arrive this fall, connect with us on social media to stay tuned to the latest news.
