Ford Teams Up with Coke for Eco-Innovative Interiors for Cars

Ford always seems to be making headlines for their innovative ways. This time they have teamed up with Coca-Cola to make a more eco-friendly interior for the Ford Fusion Energi. Currently the Ford Ford Fusion Energi is  available at Randall Reed’s Planet Ford in Humble.

As you will see in this story from ABC News, for the American automaker, creating a car that is more environmentally friendly doesn’t just mean that is offers a hybrid engine or provides better gas mileage. It goes deeper than that. It is an inside job for Ford, too.

The Fusion Energi is a hybrid vehicle that is currently in development by Ford. It uses the same material to line the car’s insides as Coke uses to make its plastic bottles.

Both plastic bottles and car interiors can be made from PET, short for polyethylene terephthalate. Back in 2009, Coca-Cola started to make bottles using PlantBottle Technology, a method that made PET but used sustainable plants in place of petroleum. Todd Nissen, a spokesman for Ford, said that PlantBottle technology caught the company’s eye.

“We actually announced an initiative that wasn’t only with Coke but with Heinz, Nike and Procter & Gamble,” he told ABC News. “Out of those talks came the idea that we could use Coke’s technology and turn PET into a fabric.”
